Allied Model Trains
Allied has been in the area since 1946, although its moved from its original location. Located in Culver City, this shop is a one-stop shopping location. So since we don't collect or build model trains, why do we even know it exists? Because one of us grew up in LA and remember loving exploring the place as a kid. And now that we have kids of our own, we love to see their excitement when they see all the cool trains. The shop itself, on Sepulveda Blvd, is not huge, but it is filled floor to ceiling with model train gear. The actual shop has many train cars of all sizes displayed in their cabinets and have one or two sets out for display. There is even a kids section with train sets which are more age appropriate for younger kids. Of course there are the Thomas the Train themed sets but also others including all the different sized Lionel classics most of us remember from our childhood.
In the old days this place had a huge, intricate train set up with towns, mountains, tunnels and several train lines. Not so today with the small size of the shop, but don't fret! It still exists, its just not in the shop itself! If you visit, be sure to cross the small side street on the same side of Sepulveda to the south. There on the corner is a Samy's camera store (a great camera shop by the way!) which has adopted the Allied display! Around the main room near the ceiling there is a big train that moves around in a big loop. But the biggest attraction is way towards the back in the corner. There you will find a huge train set just like in the old days with several lines running through mountain tunnels, over and under bridges, through towns, etc. It's a pretty impressive set up and worth the trip as your kids will probably enjoy just watching the trains go around for hours.
