Los Angeles Beaches
Some beaches are best for finding nature (hermit crabs, sea anemone, sea stars - oh my!) while others are best for surfing. Others still are great for swimming because of the gentle slope of the shore. We'll even tell you which ones are the best for beach combing...shells, holey rocks or sea glass anyone? In fact, there are so many Los Angeles beaches (over 25 miles!) that you can go to different spots all year long and it feels like you are discovering a whole new world each time...and this my friends, is what LA is all about.
Venice Beach Eccentric street performers, hippies, artists, incense blowing in the wind, cheapie sunglasses stands, pizza, corn dogs, head shops, muscle beach, basketball, volleyball, bicycles, bikinis and ice cream. This is what Venice beach is made of! Okay, that isn't entirely true. Those things are what the Venice Strip is made of. There is actually a beautiful (and usually fairly empty) beach behind the strip too. More...
Leo Carrillo Beach This one is the winner, my all time favorite of Los Angeles beaches. It is filled with tide pools just brimming with life and beauty. Hermit crabs, starfish, green sand crabs...oh my! There are rock formations, visits from seals, caves and nature trails. I can't say enough about this beach, it is well worth the short trip north up PCH, just past Malibu and there is also camping there if you have a reservation. My favorite spot for kids. More...
Newport Beach Fun Zone Newport is a beautiful beach to the south of LA which makes an outstanding day or weekend getaway. The fun zone is a fun few blocks of rides, food, arcades, bars and everything you need to party it up. While you are there don't miss a ride on the Balboa Ferry that connects Balboa Island to the peninsula. Just across the peninsula, a short walk of only a few blocks, is the Balboa peninsula beach part of Newport beach. It is a beautiful beach with good waves and we've even found a bunch of sea dollar shells strewn on the sand! More...
Santa Monica Beach Families having picnics under umbrellas, children digging up sand crabs and building sand castles, sun bathers and a whole lot of seagulls make up this busy beach. Over 3.5 miles of gently sloping beach make this a prime destination for local familes and tourists too. In fact it is one of the most visited of all Los Angeles beaches. The pier is a highlight as well, with rides, junk food, souvenier shops and fishing. More...
Manhattan Beach Yet another gently sloping beach and great local surf spot. Home to the biggest sand crabs we've ever seen in the summer months. The free aquarium at the end of the fishing pier makes this a wonderful family destination. Just blocks away are tons of great little shops in the City of Manhattan Beach and it is located just three miles from the Los Angeles Airport.. More...
Zuma Beach Surfing, swimming, volleyball and all the usual stuff happens at this huge beach with lovely sand. So what makes Zuma unique? Well, other than freezing cold water which isn't a bonus, it is known as the cleanest beach in the area and you can see dolphins swim by in winter. The old food stands give it a 1950s retro vibe and you can get lucky with free street parking. More...
Rancho Palos Verdes Beach - a hidden dog-friendly beach! This little known dog-friendly beach is hidden and tucked away behind the Trump golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes. It has excellent tide pools that are bustling with life and is paradise for rock or sea glass collectors. Many local families come here for a secluded and nature filled beach experience and the family dog can come along on a leash! Parking is free at the More...
