Los Angeles Festivals and FairsLA is big. So it is no surprise that there are literally dozens of Los Angeles Festivals and Fairs every year. In the greater LA area you can find a fair or festival for just about any topic or interest you can imagine. For starters, the LA county fair at the Pomona Fairplex is about as big and fun as a fair can get! Amber grew up in the midwest, where they take their county fairs seriously! She even won a contest for biggest pumpkin and got featured with her aunt in a local newspaper! So she had high expectations when it comes to fairs. Yet the gigantic LA fair did not fail to impress her.
But besides the county fair you can entertain yourself and your family year-round. We certainly haven't been to them all, but we've been to many and you can find out about some of these fun events below.
Topanga Days (May - usually Memorial Day weekend) Topanga Days is a great little country fair put on by the folks in Topanga. Some call it a "hippie fair" and well, it is Topanga Canyon. We love it. Great music, great food and great people. Oh yeah, and it is tucked away in the mountains and is surely one of the most beautiful settings for a festival around. You'll find everything from three stages, tie-dye shirts, organic food vendors and local artists all with the unique Topanga flair that we love. This fair has a DIY feel to it because it is...in fact it is totally coordinated and run by volunteers. Given the history of Topanga, it isn't surprising that some big names play here. More...
Watermelon Festival (August) Free watermelon with just a $1 admission donation! This fair is old school and has a friendly, small town vibe. Watermelon, corn dogs, cotton candy, rides, seed spitting contest, petting zoo, face painters and all to raise money for charity. Located in Sunland, they've been celebrating the awesomeness of watermelons for nearly 50 years and nothing much has changed! In a good way. More...
Pomona Fairplex (Year-round) The Pomona Fairplex is a huge facility for fairs and Los Angeles festivals located just a bit east of the city. It is the site of the annual Los Angeles county fair (see above). However, don't count the fairplex out the rest of the year! While each may not be as big as the county fair, there are literaly dozens of smaller fairs, shows, demonstrations and festivals that take place on these premises year-round! From monstertrucks to Irish folk festivals to hourse sales! And much more! So check out the happenings here often for the latest excitement. More...
Los Angeles County Fair (September to October) The LA fair takes place yearly, starting in early September and running for about a month. Taking place at the Pomona Fairplex, this king of the Los Angeles Festivals is a huge, sprawling fair with something for everyone. Rides, games, food, demonstrations, music, show, animals...its all here! If you like county fairs, plan on hitting this one at least a couple times if you want to come close to taking it all in. More...
Oktoberfest at the Alpine Village Torrance (Oktoberfest Sept to Oct and shops year-round) Most Angelinos don't even know this place exists! Just a bit south of the city, in a city you probably wouldn't otherwise visit, is this year-round village of Bavarian-styled buildings and shops. Want a good source for sourkraut, head cheese and beer steins? Well here it is! But that's only part of the fun... Once a year, for about a month and a half in September and October they put up a tent and party like Munich, with a big beer garden, traditional German food and German music to dance to. Unless you want to buy a ticket to Munich to visit the real festival, this is for you. And they have family friendly days on Sunday too! More...
