Los Angeles Nurseries
Obviously LA is a huge city so there is no dearth of Los Angeles nurseries. However, there are nurseries and then there are shops that sell plants. In other words, a lot of the places you can buy plants do not have the depth, variety and, most importantly, know-how of a great plant nursery. Sure, every Home Depot and Lowe's has a big plant section which may be fine for some things. But just try to find someone who knows what they are talking about. Uh, no. So we try to find specialty nurseries that really know their stuff and have an interesting assortment of plants and gardening supplies (like organic plant foods and such). This page will be a work in process, expanding as we discover new places and take more pictures. For starters, below are a few of our favorite places to satisfy our green thumbs!
Boething Treeland FarmsBoething is one of our favorites. Besides having dozens of acres and a diverse selection of plants of all types, this family-run business has brains. Ask at the counter and you will get great advice about everything from feeding to pest prevention. These are truly plant people, they know their stuff.
Boething has a 35 acre site in Woodland Hills but also runs dozens of other acres of growing grounds around southern California (and Northern Cali as well). At many "nurseries" you are just getting plants that were raised elsewhere and then bought and shipped to that store. Here, they grown almost everything they sell. It is just fun to wander around the large grounds and see all the stuff. In addition to flowers, veggies and other smaller plants, they have a huge selection of larger trees and shrubs as well.
Of note, the folks at Boething seem to be very pro-organic. If you tell them you are interested in organic gardening they will light up and have many options for pest control, feeding and fertilizing that are healthy, organic and natural.
The TropicsThe Tropics is one of our favorite Los Angeles nurseries as well, but its different. This place isn't as large and natural as Boething but what they pack into this small lot on Santa Monica Blvd is nothing short of miraculous. The focus here is on exotic, tropic plants, as the name obviously implies. It is fun to just look around at all the weird stuff. The place is packed full from floor to ceiling, you feel like you are walking through a rainforest. The staff is also very knowledgeable and helpful too. They aren't cheap, and they don't have everything (if you are looking to plant a veggie garden this isn't your place), but what they do they do well. In fact, many studios buy and rent plants from the Tropics for movie and TV sets.
Green ThumbIn Canoga Park, Green Thumb nursery is very satisfying. This place is big enough to have quite a selection, including cool things like organic vegetable seedlings in the spring, while still feeling personal and like a family-run store. This isn't a specialty shop like the Tropics, it has a good assortment of just about everything green (or red or blue or yellow... you get the idea).
