Los Angeles Zoo

los angeles zooThe Los Angeles zoo surprised me because I enjoy it there. I don't like zoos. I think they are depressing and don't like to see the animals all caged up. Before I went to the LA zoo for the first time I envisioned a bunch of cement stalls with animals overheating in the hot California weather. Thankfully, it isn't like that. (a great local zoo alternative is the Star Eco Station in Culver City)

No, it isn't the magic that is the San Diego Zoo, but it isn't too far from it either. I've been to a lot of depressing zoos in other cities, ones that make you go "Aw, look at that animal...poor thing." The Los Angeles zoo has very nice facilities (mostly) and is expanded over a nice large space. The walkways are treelined and shady, so it is really more like walking through a park than a zoo.

To really see the best side of the Los Angeles zoo, go during the winter, on weekdays and in the afternoon a couple hours before closing. It will be empty, the weather will be lovely and not hot and you'll get to see all the animals out and ready to eat their dinner. You will likely even get to see some of them being fed by the zoo keepers.

There is a petting zoo, but be aware that the petting zoo has different hours - it is closed from 1-2pm to give the animals a break and it also closes early, at 4pm. The petting zoo isn't really that great, I'll admit. Other than a few goats that seem to usually want nothing to do with anyone, there really isn't anything to pet. However, just getting up and close to one annoyed goat pretty much makes it worth it for any kid so take my comments with a grain of salt.

You can rent strollers just inside the entrance which I suggest (even for older toddlers) because the exhibits are far apart from each other and some of the paths are hilly. Don't get stuck carrying a tired out kid from all the way on the other side of the zoo.

Inside the zoo there is a large playground area with play equipment and several food stands and eating areas. The food/drinks are expensive so we always bring our own water.

If you are local and you show up and there is a long line (weekends are always busy and the line to get tickets can be outrageous) buy a yearly membership because there is never a line for this. The annual membership lines are on the left of the entrance. Just go a few times in a year and you will have saved money and avoid the ticket lines every time. With a family membership you also get a few free passes you can give to friends or other family and you'll also get a mailed newsletter that lets you know of special events and fun stuff for the kids.
