The Baker Bakery & Cafe
We recently stumbled upon this place, The Baker Bakery & Cafe, in Woodland Hills right on Ventura Blvd. It is an unassuming little place in an average looking strip mall so you'd likely miss it unless you are looking for it. We took a chance on it and have been very pleased. Unlike a lot of "bakeries" and breakfast places, this Bakers Cafe is a real bakery, with a display case full of breads and treats made fresh every day right there on the spot. But what we've gone primarily for is the yummy breakfast. First of all, when you sit down, you are greated with a plate of freshly baked bread as well as bowls of olives and marinated feta cheese. And its not just average bread slices like you get with breakfast at IHOP or other boring breakfast places, it is a selection of a few unique and delicious breads made there. They are truly delicious breads. So from the get go it feels like a more gourmet and genuine restaurant.
The breakfast foods we've had have also been great. Fruit covered French toast, excellent eggs and sandwiches... but my personal favorite is the house specialty. They serve a dish called Shakshouka (pictured above) which is an egg dish that apparently originated in Tunisia and is a staple of Tunisian, Moroccan and Israeli cuisine. It is basically eggs poached over a sauce of tomatoes, peppers, onions and spices. It is slightly spicy, served with a salad of tomatoes and cucumber, and it is delicious! We haven't had everything on the menu but I'd be surprised if there is anything that isn't good here. The cooking is real, honest and with excellent attention to detail for a breakfast place. A classy spot for breakfast and baked goods if you are anywhere near the west Valley.
