Best Cuban food in LA? Inexpensive? Gotta try Versailles Restaurant!

Versailles is actually a chain, with several restaurants in the LA area, specializing in Cuban food, and no one does it better. So anywhere you find yourself in our big city, you are probably near one of these gems. The menu at Versailles is too big to describe everything here, but despite earning an inexpensive title, the food here is first class. We can't imagine Cuban food being much better.

First of all, almost everything is served with a big heaping of steamed rice and delicious black beans in sauce. Pour those bad boys all over the rice and dig in, yum! Second, one of their absolute best specialities are their cooked plantains called the Maduros. These culinary gems come with most dinner orders but if not, order a side. Hell, you may even want to order an extra side anyway! These are slightly sweet and simply delicious with the rest of the food or alone. If they don't bring a smile to your face you may just be dead.

Another side Josh particularly likes to snack on is the tostones which are fried green plantain slices. Sprinkled with a little salt these crispy and chewy finger foods are addictive. Finally, there are a few dishes that deserve special mention since we come back to them again and again. The Lechon is a delicious slow-cooked pork served with a tangy sauce and heaping onions. Just delish. A bit more buttery and garlicy is the great shrimp with garlic (Camarones al ajilo). The serving of this dish is a bit smaller so it might not fill you up as much as the lechon but the flavors are killer. That buttery, garlic sauce poured over your rice and beans is just flat out fantastic.

Other favorites include the roast chicken, masas de puerco (slow-cooked chunks of pork), the shrimp with yellow rice (kinda like a paella). They also make a full-fledged paella which is great. But that dish takes some time to make so order ahead a big order for several people.
