Wine ExpoThe Wine Expo is a little wine shop in Santa Monica. You'll have to get past the cheap, strip mall liquor store-like exterior and give it a chance. This is one of the gems of Los Angeles and we stop by frequently!
So if you abhor "modern" styled wines with their abundant new oak and big over-ripe fruit, you'll love the selection here. If you like interesting, food friendly wines, and good, honest "farmer fizz" Champagnes that are unique and delicious, then this is the place for you!
Wines range from about $6 and up but there is a slew of stuff in the under-$20 range. And its pretty much all good! Even the cheap stuff can be very tasty and make excellent everyday pizza and pasta wines. The Wine Expo also carries a big selection of premium spirits and beers as well. They have a fun and clever newsletter they put out regularly but in addition be sure to sign up for their email mailing list which gives updates on new wines as well as frequent wine tasting events they hold.

The Wine Expo specializes in Italian wines and in Champagne and other sparkling wines. In fact, its seems like over 95% of the wines here are in one of those categories. But they also tend to focus on smaller producers who make and bottle their own wine, avoiding the big, over-hyped producers. Nary a bottle of Veuve Cliquot or Dom Perignon can be found here! They also love classic, traditionally made wines that speak of where they came from.
Be cautioned, even if you know a good deal about wine already, you may walk in and not see a single producer you recognize! In fact, you may not even recognize many of the wine regions...Oltrepo Pavese anyone? But don't fear, the salespeople here, Roberto in particular, are very knowledgeable and ready to help. Let them know what you are looking for and your price range and they will have many excellent suggestions. For extra special attention, tell them what you are eating and they are eager to help you find an interesting food and wine pairing.
