Yuca's Taco Stand

Unasumming and tiny, Yuca's taco stand is a family run business that makes probably our favorite simple but delicious tacos in Los Angeles. Located in the trendy Los Feliz neighborhood, Yucas taco stand is barely a building, just a little hut sitting partway into a parking lot along Hillhurst Ave. "Mama" is almost always there, an old woman sitting by the order window who greets you and takes your order, writing it down on a paper plate (if you are eating there) or on a brown paper bag (if you are taking food to-go).

Its a bit hard to believe they do the amount of business they do when you peer inside the little booth of a kitchen, crammed full with 3 people cooking up all the yummy Mexican goodness. The menu includes a few other things (like hot dogs, burgers and such) but the basic core of the list (and the most important) is centered around three meats, which can be served as simple, small tacos, wrapped in two small corn tortillas, or slightly bigger burritos (with beans and salsa). The carne asada is rich, grilled chunks of steak, pretty basic but tasty nonetheless. The machaca is shredded spiced beef. The carnitas are shredded, slow cooked pork. And the cochinita pibil is Yucatan style slow-cooked, spiced pork cooked in banana leaves.

A couple tips... If you are the type who likes hot sauce on your tacos, be sure to ask for the red or green hot sauce when you order. They sell small bottles. Occasionally you'll find unfinished bottles on the tables you can take but they don't give them away. Also, even though there is limited seating on small tables around Yuca's taco stand, we recommend you eat the tacos there. In our experience, if you take them to go, they dry out a bit if they sit in the bag for more than a few minutes. These are best scarfed down hot and fresh!
